Colour of the Year

Because I’m drinking a glass of Malbec and celebrating another milestone in my poetry manuscript’s life–printed out, in order, with section titles!–I offer this poem by yours truly, while it still applies.

COLOUR OF THE YEAR, 2015

by Julie Paul

People, here’s the deal:

the colour lord has announced

what’s what.

Pantone Corporation

says Marsala: a hearty

yet stylish tone.

Straight out of

the wine glass

and onto the palette,

it turns to rust and milk,

dried baloney,

a face, no oxygen.

The liver, faded.

The heart, deprived.

No matter. Welcome

the colour into the fold.

Invite Marsala to slide

‘neath the silverware,

under your jeans, right

next to your delicate parts.

Slip it between your legs

until it turns rosy, feel the love

burst—a million times better—

all over your belly.

And that skin colour of yours.

It’s so last year, am I right?

So passé, so very

nearly

obsolete.
